THE GRAVITY OF BIG BODIES

For those that consider themselves chubby chasers, big bodied people are a magnet. Like planets, they can emulate a kind of gravity. Not to make light of fat or round shapes, but I am speaking a truth that I understand personally. The desire to be close to and become embraced by someone that unspeakably pulls you in. Maybe this is more just basic rules of attraction, but again; just my truth. Nick and Patric met online like most couples do these days, but in an online world where it’s safe to be fat and to express one’s attraction to big. In an outside world that is brimming with judgement and even resentment for people that are big, this type of connection can sometimes been seen as taboo. How sad. When you see the connection and love that spills from a relationship, from a touch or embrace between Nick and Patric how taboo is it really? How sad is it? It’s not. It feels normal and right. Like planets and moons trapped in a pull of gravity.

Session with Mike

As this project progresses and grows it is becoming clear what kinds of lessons come from embracing a world of, not only body positivity but, fat acceptance and elevation. If you ever have the chance to meet me, you’ll quickly notice that I am not a large person myself. I am rather average and have been afforded a lot of public grace because of that detail. So, if the attitudes in society are not quick to change, we must embrace some changes in our selves. Through these shifts in attitude, levels of self respect, and an overall better valuation of our selves the negative positions of people around in our societies stand little to gain.

I am looking forward to writing more about, specifically, certain aspects of self love. I’d like to differentiate the sides of presenting the large body as something of value and beauty and the actively parading our bodies as objects just out there to be looked at. This is a thin line to straddle as a photographer. Even more thin as someone that has an overt attraction to large bodies and is that photographer. With each image created I am asking myself what the motivations are behind them. During my session with Mike, someone that I know personally, it was important to establish that line of professionalism. What came from that was an opportunity of good collaboration with Mike. The images that were made are intimate, yes. They are also unique and dynamic. Something is achieved in making the objectification of the subject harder to do through that collaborative process. It creates space for respect and mutuality.

There comes a time in every Chicagoan’s life when they choose

Actually that’s just so hyped, I never chose a team, and why should I? I don’t even like sports all that much. However what everyone does get to choose is whether they will act in love towards themselves. I’ve seen it first hand; what living in shame of your body and your self can do to the psyche. We are delicate beings, but we don’t have to let it lessen our value. In particular how we value ourselves should not be determined by how someone else sees us. Knowing we are more than just our bodies while maintaining that we are our bodies in a bigger sense. We are encapsulated spirits and energies and decision makers. Happy 2019 and may you learn to love yourself just a little bit more this next trip around the sun.
